Sydness Architects & New Hell’s Kitchen Office Building

Sydness Architects, a New York City-based full service architecture firm, has designed a new commercial office building located in the rapidly developing far west side. Located on the corner of 11th Avenue and West 44th Street, the building will rise atop the existing McQuaid’s Public House, a neighborhood destination for pub fare for the last 30 years.

The new 85-foot-tall building will provide 12,500 square feet of office space spanning five floors in addition to a penthouse floor with a rooftop garden. The design responds to the edgy spirit of the transforming neighborhood with zinc metal cladding and an irregular fenestration pattern; windows of varying sizes are seemingly positioned randomly across the building’s facade. The windows’ black frames will project beyond the exterior face, creating an intricate shadow pattern throughout the day. When completed, the building will be a strong anchor on the corner of 11th Avenue. The facades will give a monumental feeling to the small building with a unified form to read as a single object, rather than a set of floors stacked one on top of another.

Building atop the existing one story McQuaid’s Public House provides unique advantages to the new building’s interior design. Originally a four-story masonry structure, the building features a foundation designed to support the weight of a larger structure. Sydness Architects will be implementing a lightweight steel frame system that does not need additional reinforcement. This allows for column-free space within the building.

Tenants will occupy a space with a playful wall of windows that not only provide views to the east and south, but also allow for ample natural light to permeate throughout the interior. The unique window pattern will provide a special character and identity not found in many office spaces today. A half-floor penthouse and rooftop terrace will be a coveted amenity and provide expansive views of the neighborhood.

“We are very excited to be at work on an office building in this dynamic part of the city,” said K. Jeffries Sydness, founder of Sydness Architects. “We feel this design is emblematic of the spirit in this neighborhood.”
Once completed, Sydness Architects’ dynamic design will incorporate effective workspace design strategies to encourage collaboration and connectivity between colleagues. Despite the new changes coming to the area, Sydness Architects will preserve the original base building structure to ensure McQuaid’s pub occupies it for years to come.
